Job Responsibilities

The Bid Manager’s role is to help win business for Viasat UK in competitive bid environments key to the growth plans of the organisation.. The job holder will work in multi-disciplinary teams in order to deliver successful bids to a variety of organisations especially within the Defence domain. The Bid Manager will work very closely with the Sales and Account Managers to help shape bids at the beginning of the bid lifecycle and manage the bid through the Bid Management process until Contract Award and Acceptance.
The Bid Manager will have good knowledge and experience of at least one ‘common’ bid management process (e.g. Shipley) and must be willing to help develop the Viasat Bid Management process through a comprehensive Lessons Learnt examination of each bid. The job holder must have good financial skills in a bid environment, experience of risk management methodologies and be able to work effectively with a number of different commercial constructs such as ‘Prime-Sub’, ‘Sub-Prime’ relationships or partnerships. Additionally, the job holder must have a comprehensive understanding of project management issues such as planning and milestone deliveries/payments.
The Bid Manager must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to influence and brief at all levels within Viasat UK as well as to stakeholders in Viasat US.  The role is based within a fast moving, complex environment and dealing with complex relationships and ambiguity is key. Here are some key tasks listed below:
  • Deliver bids of a variety of complexity from initial opportunity qualification through to Contract Award and Acceptance in order to increase Viasat’s profitable business
  • Manage the Bid Team through the Bid process to deliver bids to the correct Quality, Time and Cost
  • Manage the bid plan
  • Manage the bid budget
  • Help drive the Price to Win exercise for each bid
  • Run Lessons Learned process following each bid in order to identify improvements
  • Ensure the contract is handed over to Project delivery to an agreed standard with known risks, opportunities and constraints
  • Work with Sales/BD team to maintain key relationships with external stakeholders especially other industry partners
  • Work with Sales/BD team to understand and maintain competitor data Liaise and share information with Sales operations in order to understand future workload 
  • Deliver bid management training/education to a range of internal stakeholders 
  • Responsible for championing and promoting adherence to the company’s Health and Safety code and policies
  • Responsible for operating in accordance with company’s policies and procedures
  • Provide an informed, experienced and professional interface between Viasat, existing and new customers.

In addition, from time to time, you may be asked undertake other tasks and responsibilities not covered above in order to achieve project or corporate objectives.

Skills/Knowledge/Attributes

In order to be successful within this role it is essential that the job holder has a number of the following qualities:
  • Experience in the use, planning and deployment of communication products, systems and technologies across the Defence and Security community
  • Knowledge of UK MOD & Government and NATO procurement frameworks.
  • Knowledge of other procurement methodologies used by businesses and organisations outside of Government – eg Prime System Integrators and/or Telecommunication Companies.
  • Proven ability to assimilate and communicate detailed operational & technical information pertaining to Viasat technologies and capabilities.
  • Positive and dynamic approach to problem solving and opportunity management.
  • A self-motivated achiever and team player, internally driven to accomplish goals.
  • Proactive in building relationships with ability to listen and capture customer issues, requirements and plans.
  • Excellent communication skills - both written and oral, with the ability to communicate and influence at all levels

The suitable candidate has/knows/is aware of/ is familiar with:
  •  Bid Management Methods and tools
  •  Business strategy, planning and forecasting concepts
  •  Viasat tools : Salesforce, Excel, Office 365
  •  Complex) Sales processes;
  •  A service oriented attitude;

Preferences
  • Recent experience and detailed understanding of sectors of interest to Viasat.
  • Degree educated or equivalent.
  • Be confident to deliver training and/or other key Company messages.
  • Solution driven individual.
