Our Viasat Atlanta Satcom business area, located in Duluth, GA, is a world leader in GEO, MEO and LEO satellite ground systems, providing terminals and services worldwide. Our ground antenna products and services are used in Broadband satellite communications applications by commercial, domestic and foreign government customers in a variety of worldwide applications.

The Satcom Business Area Lead will function as a technical, hands-on leader of a core team of dynamic, experienced individuals to support the growth and management of the business. Our interest is in forward-thinking, energetic, and productive individuals that have flexibility and agility to support rapid and balanced growth. We are looking for an individual who is a leader with an entrepreneurial, proactive spirit that has demonstrated experience developing product in the Satcom market, product roadmaps, and working with development teams to develop product and service solutions with flexible and innovative business models to monetize a rapidly shifting defense market.

Leading the Satcom team by developing and implementing strategic plans and initiatives to grow our business is a crucial aspect of the position. This position requires an energizing and productive individual with the ability to lead a high performing team in a dynamic environment with minimal management oversight.

Responsibilities include:

·       Business Area Management: Leading all aspects of P&L activity, including strategic planning for internal and external customers; overseeing development and maintenance of product roadmaps; leading go/no management decisions regarding new products/projects; leading and developing personnel within Viasat’s unique culture.

·       Team Building: Maintaining and building cross-functional capture and execution teams while fostering strong personal ownership; improving various engineering processes that must evolve to enable faster innovation; navigating Viasat’s culture and replicating these values within the team; assessing talent and building a balanced team that provides a solid base for growth, connection, and a proven track record.

·       Customer Relationship: Developing and fostering customer relationships inside and outside of Viasat and identifying key decision-makers.


In this role you will have overall responsibility for the performance of all aspects of the Satcom business area, program execution through leadership, program scheduling, financial reporting, and budgeting, managing contract deliverables while identifying and mitigating risks, and interfacing with program customers (internal and external). You should have a proven track record of team leadership, problem solving, performance analysis and metrics, making trade decisions, and achieving the goals of the program and business area.

The primary requirements for this position are demonstrated capabilities in engineering leadership, understanding and appreciation of Viasat’s culture, collaboration, technical and interpersonal maturity, and a passion for excellence in engineering.

·       8+ years technical or program leadership activities for a combination of hardware and software development efforts (developing, tracking, and maintaining project plans, schedules, and budgets)

·       5+ years managing multidisciplinary technical teams

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience functioning in an integrated team that operates across multiple locations
  • Ability to apply a collaborative/consultative working and leadership style, relying on common sense and personal competence for persuasion and consensus building
  • Proven ability to manage proposal efforts and participate in ongoing business development
  • Basic understanding of contract types and risk management practices
  • Ability to affect change through influence
  • Flexibility and desire to drive positive change
  • Ability to travel up to 25%
  • US government position. US citizenship required.
If the Federal Executive Order for Government Contractors becomes effective, this role may require vaccination.  In such instance, absent an approved accommodation based on a religious or medical reason, employees in this role will be required to be fully vaccinated no later than applicable deadlines, which are unknown at this point.  Viasat will strive to give individuals as much notice as practicable if a vaccine mandate becomes applicable to this role.
