Job description

One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we’re on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We’re looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.

Viasat is seeking a mid-level commercial contracts attorney to assist within primarily our European business and possibly other locations. This role will be focused on drafting and negotiating key commercial contracts, predominantly wholesale capacity distribution agreements with our B2B commercial partners across Europe but also including contracts for our related infrastructure, ground works and other legal workstreams, as well as investigating and advising on day-to-day enquiries that may involve regulatory issues such as marketing, consumer issues and other matters. Additionally, you will gradually become involved in our expanding European retail operations, and also assist other attorneys as needed on other projects (both in Europe and internationally across Africa and APAC).

You will need to provide rapid, practical, business-oriented legal/commercial contract advice directly to business clients and apply practical judgment in assessing risk in collaboration with our sales, finance, compliance and wider legal team.

Ability to travel internationally required.

About you:

You will be a dynamic, self-starter with experience within the satellite / telecommunications sector and at least 5-8 years expertise within a commercial contracts legal team.

You will be a part of a large global legal team and support, training and mentoring will be available to you, but must also be able to work independently as the majority of your legal colleagues will be international.

Essential skills:

  • Qualified lawyer in at least one jurisdiction (UK/Europe) with at least 5 years post-qualification experience.
  • Fluent English and the ability to work in at least 2 other European languages (French and German preferred).
  • Experience within the satellite / telecommunication sector and basic familiarity with the regulatory environment.
  • Training within an international law firm and demonstrable experience with international contracts including within civil law jurisdictions.
  • In-house experience, preferably within a large multi-national company.
  • Strong team player with collegiate approach, ready to assist other legal colleagues and business areas.
  • Expertise in commercial contracts, especially distribution and B2B.
  • Retail B2C experience, to support our parallel burgeoning retail operations.
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a high paced environment and juggling numerous stakeholders from across different areas of the business.
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
  • Flexibility in work expectations and in assisting other legal colleagues
  • Ability to travel within Europe for in person contract negotiations, and occasionally to the US, required.

Preferred skills:

  • Familiarity with international data protection and privacy issues.
  • Any experience working internationally in relation to USA companies and/or APAC or Africa transactions is advantageous.
