This position can be located in Melbourne or Sydney, Australia.

Job Responsibilities

Viasat seeks an experienced professional to serve as a Regional Director within its Government and Regulatory Affairs group, reporting to our Global Chief Government Affairs & Regulatory Officer.  The successful candidate will be able to:

  • Prime the relationship between Viasat and regional Asia-Pacific (APAC) Government and Regulatory Authorities – includingthe Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) as well as other national regulators in the region.
  • Manage the process for obtaining market access, landing rights, service authorizations and earth station licenses in Australia and throughout the APAC region.
  • Manage Australian,  APAC national and regional multilateral formal regulatory  processes to a successful resolution (particularly technical matters regarding spectrum)
  • Drafting detailed comments in formal proceedings, position papers, and other advocacy where required
  • Work closely with Viasat’s global advocacy teams, subject matter experts, consultants, and its local outside counsel.  
  • Advise on the formulation of company positions in connection with regulatory requirements and proceedings in Australia and throughout APAC.

Requirements

  • Established track record and considerable experience in spectrum, licensing and policy issues in the APAC region, and Australia in particular.
  • Proven previous engagements and relationships with Australian (ACMA) and APAC regulators at a senior level.
  • Knowledge of satellite and terrestrial communications systems and the frequency planning and coordination process.
  • Knowledge of ITU, Australian, and APT work processes, including preparing contributions, lobbying key administrations, and advocating positions.
  • Established contacts and excellent reputation with Australian and APAC regulators, particularly the ACMA.
  • Strong relationship-building and negotiating skills in a multicultural and multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Ability to think strategically and advocate clearly and concisely, both in writing and when speaking.
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills with high attention to detail and accuracy, together with the ability to manage many simultaneous projects under pressure and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences as well as experience in internal and external stakeholder. management.
  • Ability to ask clear, concise questions and elicit requisite answers from business partners and government and regulatory affairs colleagues as well as outside advisers.
  • Ability to take initiative and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced corporate environment.
  • Ability to work independently, but also operate effectively as part of a team.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering) preferred.
  • Ability to travel 30-40%.
  • Excellent English language skills (written and spoken).
