As part of our growth plans, Viasat UK is recruiting an Hardware Design Engineer, working on multiple Data at Rest products with emphasis on Cyber Security and Information Assurance technologies. In this role, you’ll be part of a team developing the next generation of highly secure storage solutions used to protect critical data for government and defence computers, tablets, and embedded platforms. As such, this position requires our design engineers to hold or be able to obtain UK Government SC clearance. 


Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate is an experienced Hardware Design Engineer who can operate in a multi-disciplined team designing, developing, and testing bespoke secure, high-speed digital design solutions for securing Data at Rest. In this role, you will participate in all aspects of a challenging development program including requirements elicitation, architecture, design, implementation, and test of hardware solutions. You will be responsible for the delivery of the hardware, meeting technical and project requirements throughout the complete lifecycle.


In this role, you’ll be a key member of a multi-disciplinary team:

  • You’ll work with System Engineers to elicit and refine hardware requirements and validation of requirements.
  • You’ll work with the Project Manager to define the project plan and ensure delivery is against the plan
  • You’ll own the delivery of the hardware solution from requirements through development and into production from a technical and project perspective.
  • You’ll work with Mechanical, Software and System Engineers to define the hardware design.
  • You’ll work with Viasat’s FPGA, Software and test Engineers to integrate and validate the system solution.  
  • You’ll work with System Test, Production Test, and Operations teams to ensure the solution is reliable, testable, and producible in volume.
  • You’ll represent Viasat’s culture of innovation, inclusion, and collaboration – working together with others to rise to the challenges and opportunities that are part of an innovative, fast-paced technology-centered organisation.  



  • Degree 2.1(Hons) or higher in Electronic Engineering or similar discipline
  • Must have, or be capable of obtaining, UK security clearance
  • Experience taking hardware designs through the complete development life cycle.
  • Digital design experience including microprocessor/FPGA based systems and embedded power supplies.
  • Proficient in schematic capture using an industry standard CAD toolset (e.g. Cadence, Orcad, Mentor).
  • Experience defining, guiding and reviewing pcb layout activity.
  • Hardware testing and troubleshooting using standard lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analysers etc.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills—a team player who is able to work independently and cooperatively to project milestones
  • Experienced user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc)


Desirable Experience

  • Requirements analysis, capture, and management
  • Design For Test (DFT) and Design For Manufacture (DFM) techniques.
  • High speed interfaces e.g. PCIe/NVME.
  • Ability to design for low and high volume applications.
  • Embedded firmware (C/C++) and Python programming
  • JTAG knowledge.


Further Details

  • You’ll be based at our office in Farnborough with occasional UK travel. The role is office based, but with flexibility for working from home depending on project requirements.
