Lead Product Designer - Government Systems

US - Remote Ref #11993 14-Jun-2022

Job Description

Job Description

One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we’re on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments, and militaries around the globe communicate. We’re looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.

We are seeking a passionate Product Design Lead for our growing Government Systems team. This team builds products and services that primarily support military users, on and off the battlefield.

That includes providing resilient internet access on the planes that carry our nation’s leaders, encrypting confidential communications, and enabling secure networks to be set up quickly in the field.

We work with all branches of the military, including Space Force and Special Forces. Our products take on tough technical tasks. Making those tasks easy to use under pressure makes for challenging UX.

For our military and civilian users, great designs are the ones that make complex data streams simple to process, reduce cognitive load, and enable quick decisions. Done right, our design work can save precious minutes, focus our users' attention, and ultimately, save lives.

Job Responsibilities

Our Lead Designer will own the design process end to end - envisioning future concepts, defining flows, crafting detailed interaction designs and prototypes, getting user feedback, and supporting delivery. You’ll share resources and frameworks with Viasat’s wider Customer Experience, Research and Design team, and you’ll play a key role in building tools and practices that work for government and military context. More importantly, you’ll help engineers and product leads understand great UX and become more fluent in Human Centered Design.

Here’s what you can expect to do in your first 6 months

By month 1...

  • Work with a product team on improving existing features
  • Immerse yourself in user insight, cultural context, and technical specifics of your product
  • Review the future product roadmap, and calling out user issues and design opportunities
  • Understand the Viasat design system

By month 3...

  • Interview experts, technicians, and soldiers – as part of research that you define and lead
  • Lead team work sessions to explore upcoming features
  • Support a 2nd or 3rd product team or major feature
  • Present your work to the design community

By month 6...

  • Plan the UX overhaul of a legacy product
  • Explore UX implications for an early-stage product
  • Add new components or patterns to the design system
  • Onboard new designers and researchers, and shape the Viasat GS design culture

  • US citizenship required
  • 8+ years of experience designing human-centered digital products, with specific experience building user dashboards
  • Strong portfolio outlining user/business understanding, ideation, interaction, and visual design across a wide range of user experiences. We want to see a clear “thread” from user insight through to design tradeoffs, validation, and detailed execution
  • Proficiency in the entire product development process, from identifying the problem, getting to know users, and problem-solving all the way through to visual design.
  • Ability to think and design in terms of systems not just interface elements
  • Experience working on or applying a design system
  • Ability to create high-fidelity mockups of your designs in Figma and Sketch
  • A track record of collaborating across teams and engaging business, engineering, and others in the design process
  • 3 years managing or leading design projects
  • Thorough understanding of the agile software lifecycle and ability to engage with frontend and backend engineering teams to iterate and achieve the best solutions

Preferred Requirements

  • A Degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Digital Media, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Product Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Cognitive Science or related field – or commensurate work experience.
  • Experience in military or security contexts
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
