Job Responsibilities

This is an exciting role for a mid-level professional who is looking to help drive Viasat’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Program at our main campus in Carlsbad, CA. The EHS Specialist supports the EHS Manager in the collection and reporting of data, permit management, and EHS assessments. While identifying opportunities and driving improvement of Viasat’s EHS vision and mission by interacting with a variety of internal and external customers across multiple departments and projects.

  • Deliver new hire orientation training
  • Interface with regulatory bodies (OSHA, DOT, EPA, and State/Local Regulators) in the EHS Lead / EHS Director’s absence
  • Maintain Viasat’s environmental, health, and safety permits/reporting and Best Management Practices regarding air, stormwater, waste, OSHA logs, EHS incidents, SPCC, and conservation efforts
  • Ensures continued compliance by coordinating EHS data review/reporting and compliance task tracking
  • Keep the EHS Manager aware of Environmental Health and Safety proposed rule-making and permit changes
  • Develop effective interdepartmental relationships while implementing EHS programs
  • Promote a workplace that has a proactive EHS culture
  • Participate in investigations on incidents and near misses
  • Assist with the identification of root causes and help supervision develop corrective actions
  • Support site management in the implementation of environmental, health, and safety (EHS) plans
  • Support execution of the Viasat Emergency Preparedness Plan
  • Interact with the Sustainability team and Corporate Environmental Manager on Sustainability and ISO initiatives
  • Support execution of the Viasat Emergency Preparedness Plan
  • Oversees and works with outside vendors and makes recommendations regarding vendor activities
  • Conducts and coordinates formal and informal EHS training
  • Performs site audits and inspections
  • Support the development and maintain Viasat’s Integrated EHS Management System
  • Identify the effectiveness of the best management practices and implement improvements where best fits, while getting buy-in from facilities and operations
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned


  • 5 or more years of relatable experience 
  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health, environmental science/studies, or related field
  • Ability to multi-task and work cross-functionally
  • Must have strong communication and written skills, be proficient in MS Office programs, and be able to work effectively in a team environment. Attention to detail will be critical to the success of projects
  • Strong analytical skills, with a focus on adding value
  • US Citizenship required 


  • Knowledge of California environmental regulations relating to air, water, solid waste, and material recovery/recycling and familiarity with regulatory agencies such as EPA, Cal OSHA, APCD, California Water Board, County of San Diego
  • A passion for EHS, sustainability, and social responsibility and an in-depth understanding of the global context, various stakeholders, concerns, and impacts
