Revenue Recognition Manager

US - CA - Carlsbad Ref #13647 06-Dec-2022

Job Description

One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we’re on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We’re looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.

Job Responsibilities

At Viasat, the Revenue Recognition team serves more in a consultant-type capacity than an accounting processing role. On this team, the primary responsibility of the Manager is to oversee the Revenue Recognition team and become a Revenue Recognition expert for Viasat. As an expert, the Manager will be responsible for the oversight and review of significant customer contracts and the determination of the proper revenue recognition model in accordance with ASC 606.

Through this process, you will interact with different functional areas of the company including business area finance/program managers, contracts, legal, and corporate accounting (including but not limited to accounts receivable, inventory, capital, SEC reporting and treasury). The role will entail variety, complexity, and the opportunity to diversify your own personal development as the role requires not just a detailed review/interpretation of contracts but also requires you to obtain a detailed understanding of our end-to-end process of how products and services are provided to our customers.

As you develop in this role you will become a point of contact for the various business areas throughout the company, including Viasat’s international entities. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead a team of experienced revenue recognition professionals
  • Oversee review of significant customer contracts and memorandum documentation in accordance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Work with business finance leaders to strategize and develop expectations as to how future contracts will impact future financial results
  • Make decisions on GAAP applications that will impact the timing and extent of revenue recognition
  • Oversee various financial reporting close tasks during each quarter including the review of revenue recognition cut-off and performing reconciliations and detailed tie-outs for both testing and disclosure purposes

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or relevant experience with exceptional academic records
  • 6+ years of Big 4 experience or relevant industry experience
  • Ability to oversee a team and foster their development
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Able to prioritize competing demands and continuously meet deadlines
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Experience in performing technical research and reviewing accounting position papers
  • Licensed CPA
  • U.S. Citizenship required

Preferences
  • Detail-oriented; nuances in contract language can impact technical accounting conclusions
  • Interested and experienced in understanding processes and proposing continuous improvement solutions
  • ERP system experience (Oracle/SAP preferred)
