The Role

“Do The Right Thing”

Viasat Engineering Directors embody and act as ambassadors of the Viasat culture within each business area at Viasat. We strive to provide the business with the right engineers at the right time to enable the success of the business while also providing engineers with growth opportunities, mentorship, and guidance. As an Engineering Director for VAZ, you will help manage our engineering resources, training and recruiting budgets, and work with engineering supervisors on performance reviews for engineers. You will be exposed to the greater community of Engineering Directors at Viasat and work with business leadership in translating business strategy into tangible actions to ensure our engineers have the right skills and vision to allow Viasat to continue innovating and developing cutting edge satellite  communications products and services.

The Engineering Director role provides for significant exposure to the operational side of our business as well as an opportunity to engage with all levels of business and engineering leadership. Many of the skills and knowledge you will use as an Engineering Director will directly translate to future roles at Viasat as will the relationships you build across the enterprise.

Job Responsibilities

• Resource Management: As ED, you will monitor the workload for engineers and manage the cyclic needs of development activities. You will also work with other EDs to facilitate movement of engineers across business areas allowing for growth and exposure to different technologies.

• Recruiting and Hiring: As engineering leaders, hiring is one of our most important and impactful responsibilities. You will work with engineers, hiring managers, and TA to ensure we are making the right hiring decisions for the business and for Viasat.

• Engineering Performance Management and Development: You will work with supervisors in discussing the performance management of their direct reports and recommending growth and development opportunities. You will be responsible for recommending compensation increases and ensuring equity of our engineers across Viasat.

• Indirect Budget Management: In order to support the development of our engineers and ensure they have the proper tools to do their jobs, you will be responsible for forecasting and managing the Indirect budget allocated to the business area.

Key Attributes

• Integrity: As ED you will be exposed to very sensitive information related to both the business and individual engineers. You must have absolute integrity in dealing with that information as well as in the relationships you build within the business area.

• Technical Background: In order to maintain credibility with the engineering staff, you should have experience with engineering development and management. This will allow you to better understand the nuances within engineering and empathize with both engineers and business leadership.

• Sound Judgement: Many decisions as an ED require the application of sound judgement, balancing the needs of the business and the engineer while at the same time keeping in mind the greater Viasat perspective.

• Communication: As ED you will interface with a broad spectrum of the company -  Finance, P&C, Facilities, IT, Talent Acquisition, Corporate and Business leadership, external customers, University personnel, etc. You will need to tailor your style and manner of communication as appropriate.

• Service-Oriented Mentality: The ED is only successful if the business and engineers within that business are successful. This position is not one for ego or title-focused individuals.

• Ability to affect change through influence: Although this skill is critical for many roles at Viasat, it is particularly crucial for the ED. Rarely will you have direct responsibility or authority for personnel or organizational recommendations and so will need to accomplish your vision through tact and influence.

• Conviction and comfort defending an opinion when challenged by senior leadership: You should be prepared to defend your ideas and provide thoughtful discussion on issues which may at times put you at odds with that leadership.

• Flexibility and willingness to accept change: At Viasat decisions are rarely made in dictatorial fashion and you should be prepared and open minded about alternative opinions and views. Change will happen and while it’s important to ensure that change is deliberate and in accordance with our culture, you should be flexible and supportive of change.
