Location

This team typically works out of the Carlsbad office location, although remote work has become common. If you are offered a full-time opportunity after the internship concludes, you may be required to relocate in the future. Job Responsibilities

The Structures Team works closely with mechanical engineers to design, document, and certify the hardware that is installed on commercial aircraft, allowing passengers and crew to access the internet, in-flight entertainment, and flight information. You will be a contributing member of the team, designing and analyzing antenna installation hardware, as well as improving the team’s processes, documentation, and analysis tools.

Your responsibilities will include performing static, fatigue, and damage tolerance analysis using software tools such as Excel, SolidWorks, FEMAP, and NASGRO. You will document your analysis in technical reports with the goals of certifying hardware for flight and improving the effectiveness of the Structures Team. At the end of the summer you will show-off your accomplishments through presentations to our Founders and other key leaders.

Our ideal candidate has a proven understanding of engineering fundamentals, such as free-body diagrams, shear-moment diagrams, stress and strain, and joint failure modes. They are passionate about solving problems, a self-starter, collaborative, and a strong communicator.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
  • Experience with standard industry CAD software, such as Solidworks
  • Coursework in the subjects of Statics, Dynamics, Solid Mechanics, Aerodynamics, Finite Element Analysis
  • Experience writing academic or technical reports
  • Ability to commit to a 10-12 week summer internship

Preferences

  • Prior experience working as part of a team on engineering projects in internship, extracurricular, or class settings.
  • Experience in the aerospace industry, specifically commercial aviation
  • Experience with mechanical drawings, GD&T
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis software, such as FEMAP
  • Experience with metallic fatigue or damage tolerance methods
  • Experience using MATLAB, Excel, VBA
  • Coursework in Aerospace Structures, Flight Mechanics, Vibrations, and/or Materials Science
