Advice for new university grads, from former university grads

Post-grad life can be confusing – so take some advice about life at Viasat from people who know best – our very own university grads. Hear what it’s like to work at Viasat, and how to jump in and make an impact at our company.

One of Viasat’s core values is trust, freedom, and opportunity. How do you see that manifested at work? “I was given the opportunity to pursue my master's degree from USC. Viasat has been supporting me not only financially, through the Education Reimbursement Program, but also by giving me the freedom to set my work hours for when I have tests and school projects due. Viasat trusts me to complete my work even with irregular work hours, which gives me the opportunity to achieve my educational goals.”

Karan Mehra, RF Design Engineer, Tempe AZ

How do you quickly jump in and make an impact at Viasat? “When I joined Viasat, I immediately began volunteering for tasks when the team would say, 'Who wants to do this?' I also started asking for more challenging work to push my comfort zone and my abilities. Everyone here will encourage you to come up with new ideas or challenge the status quo if you think there are improvements to be made. I would tell incoming university grads not to be scared to speak up during meetings and contribute your thoughts even – or especially – when you disagree!”

Ethan Spitz, Software Engineer, San Diego CA

How would you define Viasat’s culture? "Viasat’s culture is the perfect place for someone who likes to be themselves. People here are genuine. While there are high ambitions of innovation, the competition does not feel personal. At Viasat, work is a team sport. Supervisors are always financing opportunities to attend conferences, offering training for various certifications, or connecting you with good people to know. I have always felt like my input is valued and truly taken into consideration."

Allison Walther, Data Engineer, Germantown MD

What advice would you give university grads who are just starting at Viasat? We put a lot of trust in our university grads. You will be given a lot of freedom and responsibility. Ask lots of questions, but don’t expect answers that the answers will always be black and white. As an organization that is always on the cutting edge of technology, there’s a fair amount of ambiguity in what we do. Get ready to embrace it!”
